How unmaintained trees can affect my property

1/6/2019

Trees bring us many benefits. From giving us shade to filtering the air that we breathe, trees give us so many things that we could not even imagine. However, if we fail to give them the proper care they deserve, they can be destructive in return. Most often than not, poor maintenance brings about these problems with our trees that is why proper caring is important.

Damage Property Structures

Although roots grow slowly, they can apply pressure where they are situated. They move through the ground to look for water and nutrients it needs to thrive and this can result in the displacement of the soil surrounding them. This will cause the soil to weaken which can eventually cause the building to shift. If the ground moves, anything on its surface also moves. We know how a collapsed building can damage everything in and around it, so it is best to prevent this catastrophic event from happening by proper maintenance.

If your tree is particularly close to a building, it is wise to have it removed by a professional tree removal service. Don't try doing it yourself because it might cause more harm than good. When experts see that the roots of the tree can cause potential problems in your residence, especially in your property, they will have it removed immediately.

Damage Plumbing Systems

Trees are attracted to the drainage system that takes out water and sewage. This is especially true in areas that lack in rainfall. Willow and maple trees are especially intrusive. Their roots extend as far as it needs to search for nutrients and water. Roots easily grow into pipes because they are big enough to allow roots in. These roots eventually block the pipes totally up to a point where it will no longer function properly.

You can prevent trees from damaging your property and incurring injuries to any of your loved ones. Call your trusted tree trimming and tree removal services, so they can take care of your tree care needs. Do not try to save money by doing it on your own because you might just find yourself spending much money for repairs and hospital cost.

Tree Trimming and Climbing Spikes

12/12/2018

Upon hiring a tree service company, they each have their procedure and equipment when it comes to handling different types of trees. More often than not, they know the proper steps to handle different kinds of situations, but you have to watch out for one specific equipment that may cause more harm than good, and these are climbing spikes.

Climbing spikes, also known as climbing spurs, are leather straps or padded support wrapped on the climber's leg with sharp steel spikes attached to it. When climbing trees for whatever purpose, arborists usually use spikes to help them navigate through the tree, which is alright as long as they use it on a tree that will be removed. Using spikes on a healthy tree could lead to a lot of puncture wounds causing tissue death. Although smaller wounds would heal, larger ones that grouped can point to that area of the tree to die.  There is a fragile layer of tissue that helps produce new cells for the tree, using spikes could increase the likelihood of this area to be pierced. Repeated damage like this could cause permanent damage and is very harmful.

When is it acceptable to use spikes?

We have established that the use of spikes may damage the tree, but there are instances wherein the application of spikes is unavoidable. Below is a list of situations where the use of them is acceptable and appropriate:
  • When the branches are too high, above 50 feet, and there are no cranes or aerial lifts available in sight.
  • When the tree is infected or decayed, or in the process of being removed.
  • When obstacles surround the tree, may it be electrical wires or another person's property, if it cannot be accessed safely by other means.

Professional tree care companies know of the dangers of spikes, and along with proper tree equipment paired with experience and trained professionals, they will do whatever means necessary to preserve the health of your tree.

Here is a list of good qualities you should find in quality tree service company:
  • Reputation: Quality companies would leave good lasting impressions on their clients as well as professional affiliations with organizations such as the Tree Care Industry Association.
  • Insurance: To protect you from any possible damages or liabilities ask for proof of certificates for liability and worker's protection and always be aware if they don't have a legal company. Worst-case scenario, you could be held responsible for the contractor.
  • References: Having a group of good recommendations, speaks a lot about their work and how they handle it. Quality companies would be happy to share with their client's possible testimonials and good reviews from previous jobs done.
  • Contract: A written agreement containing the date when the work is scheduled, the amount of work and services you're planning to avail, and the total cost. It is strongly recommended that you request them to avoid using climbing spikes unless the tree is to be cut down.

Spring is almost here

Spring Clean-up Tips

We are approaching the time of year when homeowners are getting ready for spring clean-up of their lawn and landscape.  Consider performing the following activities to get your home, lawn, and landscape looking its best come this spring.

Pick-up your Lawn

Winter storms and winds can leave your lawn littered with debris, like last fall's leaves, dead branches/limbs, and other organic waste material.  Get you lawn ready for new grown by cleaning it up and allow complete sun coverage.

Fertilize your Lawn and Trees

Spring, late March and early April, is the best time to first fertilize your yard and trees.  Each are emerging from winter dormancy and will be ready to grow as soon as the first break in the cold weather.  For your trees, consider tree spikes as they are designed to be slow release and will provide nourishment for months to come.

Prune you Trees

Spring is the best, and really only, time to prune your trees.  Right before or right after new growth starts, this is the ideal time to re-shape your trees crown and eliminate unsightly and dead branches.  Taking this time to property care for your trees will yield years of enjoyment and health from them.   To properly trim and prune your trees call Cleveland Tree Service or refer to our tree trimming and pruning page.

Tips on selecting a tree service

1/9/2018

Here are several things to consider (or ask) when selecting a Cleveland tree service.  These considerations can make the difference between a good experience and a bad, costly one.

Tip #1

To know you are talking to a  tree service Cleveland residents can trust, always ask for insurance and licensing information.  This will help you determine if the business is legitimate in terms of business licensing; and if the tree service is covered if an accident or injury should occur on your property.  If they are not insured, you could likely be liable under your homeowners policy

Tip #2

Ask for a written estimate for tree services to be performed.   Many shady tree service providers will generally only want to give you a verbal quote.  This sets you up for potential cost escalations and differences of opinions on the exact services performed (vs. quotes).   Getting a written, accurate quote will assure you of the price, even after the tree services have been performed.

Tip #3

Always ask for tree service references.   Online references, even from Google, Facebook, Yelp, etc. can be faked or manipulated.  Personal references generally can not.   Asking for references can give you a first hand account of past performance enabling you to make a better decision of which Cleveland tree service company you should select.

Tree Trimming and Pruning - When?

12/4/2017

While Winter strips away the vibrant leaves of trees down to their bare bones, it is this season that is best to consider trimming and pruning.  As Spring approaches, you will want to make sure your trees are healthy to support the new season's growth.  It is important to know when trees can be trimmed to keep them healthy for the long-terms while preparing them for the upcoming season of growth.  To provide you with further information, we have addressed most of your common questions regarding tree trimming and pruning.

When is the best time to trim and prune?

You should trim or prune your trees any time between autumn and leaf-out in the Spring. This is when you tree is largely dominant and can most easily recover from pruning and trimming.   You may think this is the worst time as you can't see the shape or determine dead branches from healthy, but an experience, skilled arborist will have no problems properly trimming and pruning despite a tree looking bare.   Also, remember a tree's typical trimming or pruning cycle is between 3 and 5 years, but species, size, and condition (health) are critical factors in determine the exact time frame.

Why is the winter months the best time?

In late autumn and winters, all trees begin their dormant phase, which stops growth.  The inactivity with lowering temperatures provide a great setting for trimming and pruning.  Remember, if you prune or trim in the Spring, while the tree is growing and flowing, you might reduce the tree's growth potential that year.   Further, a winter hard ground reduced damage to surrounding plants and lawns and also provides the arborist with safe, easy access to the tree.   Refer to our trimming and pruning graphic relative to tips and suggestions on pruning and trimming trees in the winter.
